Professional nursing practice at UHN is dynamic, innovative, stimulating, and evolving. This unfolding priority for best practices and patient centered care helps us to achieve the vision and mission of nursing at UHN. Our professional practice model continues to evolve.
Nurses at UHN play a central, vital role in the provision of quality patient centred care through professional nursing practice and professional development opportunities. UHN nurses have the opportunity to contribute to quality improvement initiatives, design their own research projects, and to update their practice. Nurses at UHN are asked for their thoughts and ideas about nursing practice and participate on unit-based Professional Nursing Practice Councils (PNPC). A representative from these unit councils meet six times per year at a UHN PNPC, in an advisory capacity, to provide leadership in developing processes and systems to support professional nursing practice at UHN.
Recently, approximately 2300 UHN nurses participated in the Best of Nursing project. The purpose was to focus on where the best of nursing exists at UHN and to engage all nurses in a dialogue about what the best of nursing is, what it takes to flourish, and what would create more opportunities for the best of nursing in the future. UHN nurses are working with each other to make positive change, based on these findings, for their quality of work life and quality of life for the patients and families they serve.
