Students

UHN provides approximately 1000 clinical placements for nursing students annually and welcomes students from local nursing programs as well as students from universities across North America and around the world.

Clinical experiences take place in a wide variety of settings including in-patient tertiary care, ambulatory clinics and short stay units. Placements in specialty areas such as Intensive Care Units, Emergency Departments, Operating Rooms, and Nursing Informatics are available to a very small number of students. This usually means that placements in these specialty settings are offered to students from local colleges and universities first, and to students from out-of-town universities only after all local requests have been fulfilled.

Our goal is to ensure that student experiences provide generous opportunities to understand the comprehensive continuum of care that our patients encounter. Many undergraduate students are paired with a staff nurse preceptor who will provide consistent instruction, supervision, and feedback.

Mandatory Documentation

All nursing students and clinical faculty at UHN are responsible for reading and understanding the following prior to each clinical placement at UHN:

Once this review has been completed, an agreement form must be signed to document completion of all three steps. We have created a “course” (course code NUUHSN001W) in our eLearning Centre where most undergraduate student can complete and electronically sign off all these requirements, as well as accessing computer training and other courses. A durable transcript of your completion of these requirements will be created for you in the eLearning Centre. If you already have your User ID and password, click the image below to launch the eLearning Centre.

For more information about the eLearning Centre, click here.

Students without access to the eLearning Centre ( i.e. students in graduate and continuing education programs) should print and sign the individual version of the agreement form. The signed form must accompany the student on the first day of their clinical rotation at UHN. Signed forms will be kept on file in the Nursing Education Department (EN1-812, TGH).

In addition, all students must meet Health and Safety requirements:
