Princess Margaret Hospital Cancer Program

Surgical Oncology

What is surgical oncology?
Surgical oncology is the use of surgery to detect, diagnose and determine the extent of a cancer. Surgical oncology is also a specialty dedicated to treating patients after cancer treatment, through reconstruction (such as plastic surgery) and rehabilitation (such as occupational or physiotherapy to help patients return to everyday activities and adapt to physical changes following surgery).

Surgical oncology involves the full range of cancer care:
Detection – screening patients to find out if they have cancer
Diagnosis – determining what kind of cancer is present
Staging – determining the extent of a cancer and where it has spread
Treatment – to cure or relieve symptoms of a cancer
