Endocrinology and Diabetes

What are endocrinology disorders?
Endocrine disorders include some of the most common medical conditions such as diabetes, high cholesterol and thyroid problems. These disorders involve the system of glands and hormones that help regulate our metabolism, growth and reproduction. Less common endocrine disorders include diseases of the pituitary, parathyroid and adrenal glands.

Common diseases such as osteoporosis and reproductive disorders are managed jointly by endocrinologists and other specialists. Treating these disorders usually involves the help of a team of health care professionals, including physicians, trainees and dietitian and nurse educators.

Education is a very important part of the treatment of endocrine and diabetes conditions. With the help of a physician and the health-care team, patients learn more about their illness and how to care for their symptoms through lifestyle changes and/or medication.

UHN’s Endocrinology and Diabetes Care Area
UHN’s endocrinology and diabetes care is provided through our three hospital sites and our close partner, Mount Sinai Hospital. Patients are usually referred to our services by their family physicians or by other specialists and their first appointment will most often be with an endocrinologist. These specialists are part of a team of dietitian and nurse educators and trainees who work together to help with patient care.

In addition to meeting with an endocrinologist, patients will often meet with a dietician or nurse educator on their first visit. These team members will help patients begin developing a treatment plan and will schedule follow-up appointments based on the patient’s individual needs.

As well, individual or group diabetes education is available at the Toronto Western Site Diabetes Education Centre (416-603-5897). Education is available in English, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese and Polish. Patients can self-refer or be referred by a physician.

Our care area is also involved in consultations with inpatient units at UHN sites and Mount Sinai Hospital. We help out when patients who are in hospital for other health care issues need assistance managing their diabetes or endocrinology condition.
