Pain Management

Pain Management Methods:
Complementary Alternative Therapies

Complementary Alternative Therapies (CAM) or natural therapies are a broad variety of healing resources that encompass all health systems and practices.

CAM therapies can include:

Nutritional therapies
Herbal botanical therapies**
Physical therapies such as acupuncture
Energy or life force therapies such as healing touch, tai chi and reiki
Psychological and mind-body control

**If you are taking any herbal or botanical therapies it is important to let your nurse, pharmacist or doctor know about these. These herbal products may have an effect when mixed with your medication or treatments such as chemotherapy.

Many people find natural therapies to be helpful for pain management, including relaxation, massage therapy, Healing Touch, Therapeutic Touch, acupuncture and meditation.

For more information on CAM therapy, visit UHN's Health Information section on Complementary and Alternative Health Care.
