Pain Management

Pain Management Methods:
Patient Controlled Oral Analgesia

This kind of pain management is similar to the intravenous patient controlled analgesia (PCA) except, you receive oral medications which you take yourself. A nurse will leave you with one dose of medication. When you have pain, you take the pill and notify your nurse so he/she can leave you with your next dose of medication.

Your Responsibilities
You have responsibilities with this type of pain management. The nurse will give you a container with one dose of your medication in it. Again, it is important that you tell us immediately if your pain is not under control. Remember it is easier to prevent pain or to treat it before it starts.

You are responsible to:

1 Take the medication when you have pain. Mark your pain level on a flow sheet before you take the medication and one hour after taking your medication.
2 Let the nurse know if you feel any of the side effects of the medication such as nausea or drowsiness.
3 Tell your nurse if your pain is not adequately controlled with the dose you are receiving.
