Pain Management

Pain on Admission to Hospital

If you are taking any pain medication at home, you must let us know when you come into hospital. Tell your doctor and nurse when you come into hospital. Your body is already used to the pain medication and you must continue the dose you have at home. This is very important.

Talk to your health care provider

Ask your doctor or nurse what to expect while you are in hospital.

You may want to write down your questions before you meet with your doctor or nurse.
Discuss the pain control options with your doctors and nurses.
  Make sure to:
Talk with them about methods and medications that have worked well in the past.
Ask about any concerns you have about the pain medications.
Tell them about any allergies to medicines you may have.
Let them know about all the medications and herbal supplements you take for any health problems.

Less Pain
The better your pain is managed in hospital, the better you will do. With less pain you will be able to walk more frequently. You will be able to do deep breathing to prevent pneumonia. Your sense of well-being will help your body to heal faster.

Please use the medicine that we are giving you
It is important for you to use the medicine as often as you need to keep your pain level down to a manageable level. Take enough pain medication so that you are able to perform the activities to aid in your recovery such as walking around and taking deep breaths.
