What is PFAC?
The Patient and Family Advisory Committee of The Gerry and Nancy Pencer Brain Tumor Centre is a small committed group of volunteers who provide advice and feedback to The Pencer Centre staff on those things that matter most to people affected by brain tumors. Formed in the spring of 1998, months before The Pencer Centre even opened its doors, PFAC has input into every aspect of The Centre. Because the committee members are patients and caregivers, they bring an experience to the table that can’t be matched by any other member of The Pencer Centre Team. No new program is introduced into The Pencer Centre without getting the PFAC “seal of approval.” Members also are involved in fundraising initiatives for The Centre.

Types of Grants Funded
PFAC is interested in funding studies within the University Health Network (UHN) that focus on the cause, behaviours and treatment of brain tumors and their effects on the behaviour and quality of life of brain tumor patients, their families and caregivers. Notwithstanding the above, any proposal of merit relating to brain tumor patients and their families will be considered.

Eligibility Criteria
The maximum award per year is $35,000. Depending on the number of meritorious submissions and their respective budgets, awards may be reduced at the discretion of PFAC to support more than one project. Funds unspent within a given funding cycle will be carried over to the next competition.

Requirements of Funding
Researchers receiving a grant must acknowledge this in a footnote in all publications and presentations resulting from PFAC funding and must provide PFAC with reprints. Researchers will be asked to submit a lay summary at the completion of the project. They will also be expected to communicate their findings (e.g., an oral presentation or poster) at the annual Pencer Centre Open House for patients, their families and medical professionals.
