Allied Health - Pharmacy
UHN Department of Pharmacy Services is committed to providing optimal patient care by supporting a structure which integrates professional knowledge, ethics, skills and experience in the delivery of patient-focused care and supporting pharmacy services. Pharmacy services are provided for inpatients of UHN as well as for outpatients through our outpatient pharmacy at each site. Pharmacists play an integral role within the multidisciplinary health care team through identification, resolution and prevention of drug-related problems, development of pharmacy care plans, participation on patient care and teaching rounds, membership on quality teams and provision of drug information. Pharmacists are active on each of the Antimicrobial, Neurosciences, Cardiology, Oncology and MultiOrgan Transplant subcommittees of Pharmacy and Therapeutics as well as on the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee itself.
Operational services are supported by pharmacy technicians and the use of the Pyxis automated drug distribution system. The department is committed to the initiation of pharmacy-based research and to the support of clinical trials research. UHN is a major teaching site for undergraduate pharmacy students and postgraduate Doctorate and Pharmacy students as well as students from pharmacy technical schools. The department coordinates a post-graduate hospital pharmacy practice residency program accredited through the Canadian Hospital Pharmacy Residency Board as well as two post-doctorate pharmacy residency programs in HIV and infectious disease. A majority of our staff pharmacists have recognition through cross-appointments with the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto.
