Volunteering at UHN

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What qualities are we looking for in a volunteer?
We are looking for individuals who share UHN core values of caring, excellence, innovation, teamwork, integrity and leadership. Ideal candidates will be able to reflect these values through reliability, punctuality, commitment and fulfillment to our program.
2. What do I have to be able to show evidence of immunity to?
All interested candidates must be able to provide documented evidence of immunity to Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Chicken Pox. While other vaccinations are beneficial they are not mandatory. A TB skin test will also be conducted on candidates who receive conditional acceptance in the volunteering program at UHN.
3. Will volunteering lead to employment at UHN?
UHN's Volunteer Resources Department is responsible for providing our hospitals with volunteer services and has no authority to offer employment. Volunteering MAY provide experience or exposure that will help you find a job at UHN or elsewhere but volunteering DOES NOT guarantee you will be offered a job at UHN.
4. I have received professional training (nurse, physician, dental hygienist, counsellor) may I practice that as a volunteer?
While we welcome volunteers with health care backgrounds, volunteers are not permitted to act as professional health care providers in the hospital. All volunteers must work within the scope of the duties assigned to them.
5. I have no email or internet access. How can I become a volunteer at UHN?
In those circumstances, which we hope are increasingly rare, you can attend an info session and then speak with us directly.
