Volunteering at UHN - Volunteer Profiles

Meet some of our volunteers and find out who’s apart of our team and why they love volunteering at UHN so much!

Name: Jacques
Years of Service: 1year
Current Placement:
Peter Munk Cardiac Visiting
Former Occupation:
Education Officer

“I became a volunteer after I saw an ad in CARP magazine. I had always wanted to repay my debt to Toronto General Hospital for their care and good services towards me when I had my open-heart surgery. The fact that on a regular basis I provide support for those who will be going through my own experience as a cardiac patient means so much. I serve as an example of successful recovery which gives hope and comfort to the patients and their families.”

Name: Dee
Years of Service: 4 years
Current Placement:
Chemo Daycare HBB
Former Occupation:
Independent Documentary Filmmaker

“It just feels so great, after a shift at the hospital, when you know that you’ve been able to help someone through a difficult time – however small.  My friends often say that I’m ‘so good’ to do all this volunteering – but that’s not true at all.  Believe me, if I didn’t love it so much - if I didn’t get so much back in return - I can assure you I’d not be doing it.”

Name: Tom
Years of Service: 2 ½ years
Current Placement:
Gastro Intestinal Clinic at PMH
Occupation:
Student/UHN Staff Member

“I had reached a point in life where I knew I had to make a change.  I thought that volunteering would be a great way to re-invent myself.  Two and a half years later, I am in school, have a new job and have developed strong relationships with the patients and staff members at the hospital.  My volunteer experience has had a profound impact on me.  I now look forward to each new day!”

Name: Yunus
Years of Service: 3 years
Current Placement:
Emergency Department at TWH
Occupation:
Student

The experience of volunteering at Toronto Western Hospital in the Emergency Department and as a Patient Visiting volunteer has been very fulfilling.  My interaction with patients has made me realize that meeting people's emotional needs is just as important as meeting their physical needs.  I've had the opportunity to meet new people who also believe in helping others and in making a positive impact in whatever small way we can.

Name: Al
Years of Service: 3 years
Current Placement:
Hyperbaric Medicine at TGH
Occupation:
Student/Web Designer

“I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer in innovative departments like Nursing Informatics and Hyperbaric Medicine. Wherever I’ve been, staff have always made me fee l like I am an integral part of the team. They helped to encourage me to discover new sides of myself. I am glad the Volunteer Resources Department took the time to find placement opportunities that matched my skills and interests.”
