This year the first inter-professional General Internal Medicine (GIM) Symposium will be held on Friday, October 10, 2008. The University Health Network is hosting the one-day event. The Symposium is intended to celebrate the diversity of a healthcare environment in which patients receive care for multifaceted illnesses. As a result of this complexity, a broad knowledge base shared among every member of the health care team is necessary to provide safe, efficient and patient-centred care.

The main theme of the Symposium revolves around inter-professional collaboration in GIM. Evidence-based practices are promoted in this learning environment. The content of the Symposium has been driven by a needs assessment survey in which key areas of interest were tabulated. The invited speakers are representative of the various disciplines and will be addressing these topics. A focus on the Program’s evolution will showcase the innovative practices that are currently taking place. There will be an examination of the role that health care providers contribute in enhancing patient safety. Another focus will be on advanced understanding and implementation of effective support strategies as they relate both to end of life care and Cancer related risk. The Symposium will conclude with an inter-disciplinary panel discussion of a common patient case study that will demonstrate communication and collaborative learning.

This is the first year of a proposed annual initiative. The expectation is that with each year the content of the Symposium will build on the transference of knowledge to clinical practice. It will contribute in highlighting the complex diversity to practice in GIM. It will aid to provide the foundation for an inter-professional exchange that will lead to safer healthcare, increased patient and healthcare satisfaction and improved resource utilization.
