Hyperbaric Unit
Toronto General Hospital operates a large hyperbaric multiplace chamber and two hyperbaric monoplace chambers. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the medical use of 100 per cent oxygen at between two and five times normal pressure.
Originally developed to treat victims of diving accidents, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is effective in a number of other applications:
- Toxicology Problems -carbon monoxide poisoning/smoke inhalation/cerebral arterial gas embolism
- Ears, nose, throat, orthopedic and plastic surgery problems - including crush injury, soft tissue and bony radiation injury, problem wounds, grafts
- Infectious Disease - including necrotizing infection, gas gangrene and refractory osteomyelitis (infection in the bone)
