Infection Prevention and Control
Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) is a corporate service for UHN's three hospitals. We monitor all patient floors and support service areas. Our mandate is to increase quality of patient care by identifying sources of infections and preventing their spread through surveillance, education and consultation.
Our services:
- Investigate outbreaks and clusters, and implements control strategies
- Request or stop isolation of patient
- Conduct surveillance of post-operative surgical wound infections, antibiotic-resistant infections, tuberculosis, and others
- Orient and provide on-going education to all staff on infection control concepts and practices, communicable diseases, and other topics
- Provide consultation on: reprocessing of supplies and equipment, product usage, infection control techniques and practices, environmental control, and related issues
- Develop infection control policies
- Plan programs based on disease trends and standards
- Provide continuous quality improvement strategies
- Provide inpatient consultants for various issues and also communicate with other hospitals and Public Health units
