Library Services

Our Services

University Health Network Libraries provide a variety of services to staff, physicians, and students to meet their information needs, including document delivery, research, training, and access to photocopying facilities.

Document delivery
This service is available to all UHN staff and students with a valid badge. Clients may request books and journals from the library at any division at no cost. Turnaround time is usually within two to three business days unless otherwise specified.

Items not available in the UHN libraries may be requested from other locations. For each item borrowed there is a flat fee, plus any additional costs charged by the lending library. Materials usually arrive within three to four business days. Requests can be submitted by filling out a request form, or by telephone (416) 340-4121. Please provide as much information as possible.

For non-University Health Network staff, document delivery is available through HealthSearch.

Literature searching
The Library offers free literature searches, including assistance with searches for systematic review work, on all online databases for UHN staff and students. Results may be printed, faxed, or e-mailed to you. For more information, contact your Information Specialist.

For non-UHN staff, literature searches on online medical databases are available through HealthSearch.

Keeping up to date
Staying abreast of the most up-to-date literature is a simple process with an AutoAlert. An AutoAlert is an excellent way to stay current on a specific area of interest. It enables you to save a search and automatically receive updates via e-mail whenever new articles matching your search criteria are published. Our Information Specialists can set up an AutoAlert (SDI) on your behalf on our OVID databases, such as MEDLINE, CINAHL and PsycINFO, or an RSS feed in PubMed.

For non-UHN staff, AutoAlert strategies can be arranged by HealthSearch.

MEDLINE and other database training
Free group and individual training sessions on bibliographic and full-text database searching are offered for UHN staff and students. Group workshop schedules are available on the Virtual Library site (through the UHN Intranet). For more information, please call (416) 340-3429. For individual training sessions, please contact your Information Specialist.

Photocopying facilities
Photocopiers and printers are available for use at all sites with the use of a copy card, which can be purchased in various denominations at any of our locations. UHN medical students and residents may be entitled to free copy cards in predetermined denominations, provided they are registered with Medical Education and hold a valid UHN badge. The photocopy/print charge is 10 cents per page.
