What kind of retail will be in the new centre?
As this is primarily a medical research centre that will also house Rehab Solutions services, we anticipate minimal public traffic. Therefore no retail facilities are planned for the new KDC itself. The new building will however be connected to TWH where a variety of retailers, including food kiosks and pharmacy vendors are currently located.
2. When will construction begin?
Pending necessary permitting, we expect to begin construction in early 2010.
3. When will construction be finished?
The expected completion date for the new KDC is early 2013.
4. How do I get a job working on the construction of the building?
The majority of people working on this project are unionized trades people. As a result, we are bound by local union agreements in respect to hiring practices. However, where possible, we are committed to considering qualified local residents for positions not under the control of the union agreements.
5. How do I get a job once the building is open?
Once the construction phase of the project is complete and KDC is into full operations, we will endeavour to provide various positions to qualified individuals from the local area.
6. There is no street parking for residents – where do I park my car?
Residents should not expect to experience any changes to current parking availability. Patients, staff and visitors will continue to park in the Nassau St. lot, and designated parking spots in the Bathurst St. underground parking garage.
7. What are the hours of operation for construction?
Construction operations will take place between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
8. Will patient care and/or clinics be affected by the construction?
We do not anticipate any changes to current patient care and/or clinics as a result of the construction. There may be temporary route access changes to the building due to construction. If this takes place, there will be special signage placed throughout the facility to ensure patients and visitors are able to find their way.
9. How do I donate to the hospital or the new research Centre?
Our Foundations work to support the work of our hospitals. From the creation of new medical and research facilities like KDC, the recruitment and retention of the best healthcare professionals in the world to the establishment of Chairs, Fellowships and Professorships – the Foundations facilitate progress and development through various fundraising mechanisms to ultimately benefit patients. 10. How can I get status updates on the construction?
There are several ways that you can get updates on the progress of this new Centre. You may receive these updates in the following ways:
Online. Please visit www.uhn.ca and click on the KDC link.
TWH will also be continuing our community meetings. Please stay tuned for detail on upcoming dates.
Refer to our call-in line at (416) 715-5251. This line will have updated recorded messages on construction progress.
11. When will staff be moving into the new building?
We anticipate the first building occupants moving into KDC in early 2013.
12. Will there be family doctors in the new building?
Our Family Health Team is currently and will continue to be located at TWH post KDC construction. For more information on this service, please contact the Family Health Team at (416) 603-5888.
13. I’d like to add my input to the process. How do I do that?
TWH will continue to hold regular meetings within the community to receive feedback from our community members. Please stay tuned for upcoming dates.
We have also set up a KDC call-line where recorded messages will advise on construction updates. You will also be given the opportunity to leave a message regarding your questions or concern and a KDC representative will return your call.
14. Why are you building this Centre here?
The new research centre is being built at Toronto Western Hospital in order to bring our facilities in-line with the global leading research that our researchers are pursing. This is an opportunity to renew our aging facilities with a state-of-the-art building and help to recruit and retain internationally renowned research scientists. The new building will also provide us space to find better treatments and ultimately cures for illnesses that can affect us all, such as Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis and eye disease.

16. What impact will KDC have on the community?
This Centre will be home to many world-class researchers, physicians and other medical support staff who will continue to make use of the various services and businesses within the greater community.
17. Who is Krembil?
Robert and Linda Krembil’s $30 million lead gift for the Krembil Discovery Centre provided the inspiration for the Krembil Discovery Centre Campaign.
The Krembil family are strong supporters of neuroscience research and have established the Krembil Neuroscience Centre at the Toronto Western Hospital and the Krembil Chair in Neurology. Robert Krembil is currently a member of the UHN Board of Trustees and a member of the Krembil Discovery Tower Campaign Cabinet.
18. Who is A.B.E?
A.B.E. is an integrated joint venture consortium comprised of three leading firms, each with their own experience, capabilities and advantages. The members are AMEC America’s Limited, Black and McDonald Limited and EllisDon Corporation. This group has worked together for the past five years and led in the construction of such notable buildings as the University Health Network Toronto Medical Discovery Tower at MaRS and the Hamilton Sciences David Braley Cardiac Vascular & Stroke Research Institute.
19. How much does KDC cost and where is the money coming from?
Creating a world-class research Centre like KDC is a major enterprise. Funding for the projects comes from a combination of hospital financing, research grants and private support. The total project cost is $150 million.
20. I’ve heard Rehab Solutions is going to be housed in the new KDC building. Who are they and what type of work do they do?
UHN Rehabilitation Solutions (RS) has been part of UHN since 1986. RS is a unique service operating in close association with UHN’s Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis Program (MHA). With a mission to provide “The Right Care. Always”, it provides a full continuum of services for clients referred by third party payers, such as the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), auto insurance companies and employer groups. These services include complex rehabilitative care, disability management and pain management. Individualized and integrated care that respects the client and is delivered with integrity has been the cornerstone of UHN RS’s success and the quality of the care clients receive.
