Over half a million Canadians suffer from some form of heart disease with over 50,000 being treated for advanced heart failure annually. Nearly 40 per cent of patients die within the first year of diagnosis. University Health Network is home to one of the largest Cardiovascular Surgery Centres in Canada. Our 13 surgeons perform more than 2,000 surgeries per year. Their combined skill and expertise allows UHN to offer comprehensive innovative surgeries and treatments for patients with complex heart conditions. This experience allows our team to develop innovative techniques and treatments that create the best clinical results for our patients.
Our health care team has the expertise in treating adults with:
- heart bypass surgery (also known as open heart surgery)
- valve repair
- end stage heart failure
- congenital heart conditions
- thoracic aneurysms
Typically, our patients’ needs are great and their surgeries are technically difficult to do. As a major referral centre, our patients come from around the province and across Canada. We are also a destination of choice for international patients with complex cardiovascular surgery and interventional needs.
For more information, please contact the Heart and Circulation Program at (416) 340-3451. We are a proud member of the Cardiac Care Network of Ontario, an advisory body to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.
Our team members are not only care givers, they are dedicated teachers, educating national and international trainees. Our leadership and innovation in the field is well-known and we contribute actively to continuing education programs for our professional colleagues in Cardiovascular surgery (other heart surgeons).
Established surgeons from around the world visit our operating rooms to learn more about the way we care for our patients. In addition, we publish many research reports each year. This adds to the professional knowledge and skill of our fellow cardiac surgeons and helps to improve the treatment of all cardiac patients.
