Patient Education Network
Princess Margaret Hospital
Programs and Services
The Patient Education Network provides a number of services and programs. They will help you find the information that you need in a way that suits you.
The main Patient and Family Library and 16 satellite Resource Centres conveniently located in clinic waiting areas at Princess Margaret Hospital give patients accessible and timely information. This includes hundreds of pamphlets and brochures with basic information on cancer-related topics. The collection also includes more in-depth resources. There are many books, audio tapes, videos and computer-based programs. Patients can use these resources in the centre or borrow them to use in the comfort of their own home.
Finally, we recognize that education requires a human face. Our innovative volunteer program ensures that there is always someone available to help our users find the information that they need.
We have several exciting and innovative resources and activities to support patients and families at Princess Margaret Hospital:
- The Patient Education Intranet Web Site provides patients and families with access to hospital orientation information, education and support program information, a calendar of events, an electronic library catalogue, a comprehensive Internet database and the Oncology Interactive™ Education Series.
- Patient Education Workshops and classes are tailored to support patients and their families and to meet their information needs. Topics include: Understanding Your Radiation Therapy Treatment, Introduction to Chemotherapy, Nutritional Wellness During and After Treatment, Helping Children Cope When a Parent Has Cancer, and Understanding Clinical Trials.
- The Multicultural Resource Development working group was established by the Patient Education Network to identify top patient teaching tools for translation to address the needs of our patients of different cultures and languages. Presently, several teaching tools have been translated into Chinese, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Vietnamese and French.
- The Health Information Search Request Form provides patients and families with specific cancer related information tailored to their individual requests.
- Monthly Internet Workshops and written guidelines have been developed to instruct patients on using the Internet effectively when seeking health information.
- The Semi-Annual Patient Education Newsletter keeps patients and health providers informed about new services, developments and events in the Patient Education Network.
The Patient Education Network continues to develop new and innovative approaches in response to the needs of patients, their families and their health care providers.
