Oncology Interactive Education Series
"Patients want and need accurate, easy to use and accessible information to make informed choices about their care, and this series is a testament to our commitment to support patients in this process." Pamela Catton, Director of Oncology Education at PMH
Early in the development of this series, many key physicians and educators at Princess Margaret Hospital recognized the possibilities of this series to deliver effective cancer education. Princess Margaret Hospital and its Foundation were in a unique position to collaborate on a project that required extensive resources and medical input.
This collaboration has resulted in a global initiative involving hundreds of health care professionals and patients from Princess Margaret Hospital and other internationally renowned institutions.
PMH has implemented its own unique model for utilizing the OIES, by integrating it into an extensive Patient Education Web site that provides information, tools, and support to those coping with cancer. The Web site is accessible on each of the computers in the Patient and Family Resource Centres located throughout the hospital and in the main Princess Margaret Hospital Patient & Family Library.
This Series has already touched the lives of many people, providing patients and heath care professionals with the high quality, graphic rich information they need and demand.
The educational value of the Series is unparalleled and with its help, patients are able to find the information they need to be active participants in their own care. The better educated a patient; the more likely they are to ask specific questions, facilitating focused consultations with their health care professional. Patients are also more likely to make informed decisions related to their treatment options.
Since April of 2001, over 16,000 users have had access to the electronic Patient Education Network, and it has received very positive responses from our patients, their families, and health care professionals.
