What is it?

For patients and families who do not speak English or who are newcomers to Canada, the health-care system can be overwhelming. Language and cultural differences can make it difficult for patients to communicate their needs and concerns — and to understand their treatment. This lack of understanding can result in decreased access to health care or misunderstandings between health-care providers, patients and families. In turn, many men, women and children of diverse languages and cultural backgrounds can be at greater risk for health problems.

Creating culturally-competent health-care programs and services helps keep our communities healthy and empowers community members to take responsibility for their health and the health of their families. Culturally-competent health care takes into account not only differences in language, but also differences in practices and experiences that affect our expectations in health-care interactions.

  Selected Patient Information Resources in Asian Languages is a joint initiative of the South Cove Community Health Center and Tufts University Health Sciences Library and is supported by a grant from the New England Region of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. It provides consumer health information that is developed and maintained by authoritative sources and with English version for comparison.
