Information for Patients and Families

What does hospital acquired mean?
Sometimes when patients are admitted to the hospital, they get infections while they are in the hospital. This is a hospital-acquired infection or a nosocomial infection. Usually it is MRSA, VRE or C. Diff.

How do we control the spread of these infections?
The Infection Prevention and Control Unit is responsible for working with employees, visitors and patients to minimize hospital-acquired infections. To control the spread of these infections, we use routine practices such as:

hand washing,

environmental cleaning,

sterilization of equipment,

single use of supplies,

education, and

additional isolation precautions.
