Preparing for an Influenza Pandemic

Infectious disease experts believe that a global pandemic is not a question of “if” but “when.” While we cannot predict when a pandemic will strike, we can prepare our response.

As a leading hospital network in Canada, University Health Network (UHN) has been preparing for an influenza pandemic. Our goal is to minimize the pandemic’s impact on our staff and patients and to keep our hospitals (Toronto General, Princess Margaret and Toronto Western Hospitals) operating during a pandemic so we can care for patients. In 2005, UHN struck a Pandemic Task Force to address complex operational and ethical issues specific to our hospital services.

UHN is also working closely with other teaching hospitals in Toronto (TAHSN) to coordinate our planning efforts and to benefit from each organization’s expertise and experience. In May 2006, TAHSN released pandemic planning guidelines that will shape each hospital’s pandemic response. A copy of the TAHSN Planning Guidelines is available on this website.

To keep you informed of UHN’s pandemic planning efforts, we encourage you to visit our website regularly.
