When human infants are delivered at a very premature gestational age, they at risk for certain development-specific organ injuries. In particular, their delivery prior to maturation of their primary and secondary antioxidant defence systems can lead to severe chronic lung and retinal damage. Major limitations of conventional antioxidant approaches make a gene therapy approach an attractive alternative. Because these injuries are maturation dependent, and rare in full term infants, only transient expression systems will be required for gene therapy. My research focuses on the development of such transient antioxidant expression systems for intrapulmonary and intraocular delivery in animal models of neonatal lung and retinal oxygen toxicity.
