THE TORONTO HOSPITAL/UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO
MULTI ORGAN TRANSPLANT PROGRAM
The Multi Organ Transplant Program (MOTP), the largest transplant program
in Canada, is an integrated program of the University of Toronto, The Toronto
Hospital and other U of T teaching hospitals. Each year, The Toronto Hospital
performs approximately 225 organ transplants (kidneys, heart, lung, liver)
and it follows approximately 1,500 transplant patients post-surgery.
The mission of the Multi Organ Transplant Program is to build a centre of
the highest clinical and academic quality for patient care, research and
education in the field of immunology and transplantation. The program is
founded on the belief that multidisciplinary collaboration and effective
communication among team members will support continuous quality improvement.
The research arm of the MOTP is led by Dr. Gary Levy, Director of the Transplantation
Research Unit. Research is a high priority of the Multi Organ Transplant
Program. The Toronto Hospital and the University of Toronto have provided
12, 000 square feet of contiguous space at the Hospital. This has allowed
consolidation of principal investigators who are devoted to studies in the
basic science of immunology and transplantation.
Transplantation research of the Multi Organ Transplant Program includes
basic research of organ preservation to improve transplantation strategies;
evaluation of immunosuppression and therapeutic approaches to allow better
tolerance for transplants; molecular-biological approaches to study immune
mechanisms; and clinical and surgical advances in transplantation of heart,
lung, liver and kidney.
The Toronto Hospital is renowned for its medical breakthroughs in transplantation.
The world's first successful single lung transplant and first successful
double lung transplant were performed at the hospital in 1983 and 1986,
respectively. In 1988, the world's first successful double lung transplant
on a cystic fibrosis patient was performed.
The Toronto Hospital is the largest acute care teaching facility in the
country with 1200 beds. It has a world-wide reputation as a centre of academic
and research excellence in four programs which the Hospital has designated
as priority programs: cardiac sciences; neurosciences; oncology and transplantation.
