The Toronto Hospital establishes largest musculoskeletal unit in Canada
with opening of new Rheumatic Diseases Centre
The Toronto Hospital has established the largest musculoskeletal unit in
Canada with the opening of the Centre for Prognosis Studies in the Rheumatic
Diseases, and expands patient care services and research in women's health,
particularly in the area of lupus.
The centre consolidates outpatient care, teaching and research in one geographic
location at The Toronto Hospital, Western Division and it becomes part of
The Toronto Hospital's Arthritis Centre. Staff of the new centre were formerly
affiliated with Wellesley Hospital where a Lupus Clinic was established
in 1970.
"Consolidating the various aspects of the centre into one location
will help improve the care and quality of life for people with lupus and
other rheumatic diseases," says Dr. Urowitz.
"Lupus is an important women's health issue, and the Centre for Prognosis
Studies in the Rheumatic Diseases will provide a complete continuum of care
throughout the lives of women with lupus," says Dr. Dafna Gladman,
Deputy Director, and Professor of Medicine, University of Toronto. "The
Toronto Hospital is committed to expanding its services to women's health
and providing excellence in patient care, teaching and research in diseases
affecting women."
"The opening of the Centre for Prognosis Studies for the Rheumatic
Diseases at The Toronto Hospital establishes the largest musculoskeletal
unit in Canada," says Dr. Robert Inman, Director, Rheumatology Division,
The Toronto Hospital. "This unit provides the whole spectrum of bench-to-bedside
research and comprehensive care to patients with rheumatic diseases."
