Pharmacy services integrate professional knowledge,
ethics, experience and skills. Together, our team of
pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, inventory clerks,
and systems application specialists contribute to pharmacy
services across UHNs three hospital sites. Pharmacy
staff play a vital role in optimizing patient care related
to medication use. Our services support other health
professionals and serve thousands of patients a day.
In addition to filling prescriptions and providing patient
education, we are also on the leading edge of research,
education, and technology use.
What we do:
- Fill in-patient prescriptions (more than 10,000
doses per day)
- Fill retail (outpatient) prescriptions (more than
700 prescriptions per day)
- Use computerized system to maintain patient drug
profiles and check for drug interactions
- Operate retail HIV Satellite Pharmacy at Toronto
General Hospital
- Provide patient education and consultation on drug
therapy, handling some 3,600 drug information requests
each year
- Support approximately 250 active clinical trials
at UHN each year
- Train approximately 50 undergraduates and 25 postgraduates
annually, as the main teaching site for the Faculty
of Pharmacy, University of Toronto
Technological advancements continue to improve the
accuracy, safety, and efficiency of our medication dispensing.
We use fully-computerized patient drug profiles to check
for drug interactions; an automated drug-dispensing
system at all three sites; and we plan to pilot a new
Physician Medication Order Entry in Spring 2003.
