Anesthesia services extend well beyond the confines of the operating room.
We are involved in the total perioperative care of the surgical patient.
Before surgery, we provide consultation to manage risks and to ensure that
surgery patients are in the best medical condition possible before undergoing
an operation; during surgery, we provide anesthesia care and monitoring
to make sure the patient can withstand the trauma and stress of the operation;
and after surgery, we oversee the recovery of patients from anesthesia and
surgery and help manage patients' pain.
In addition, because of our expertise in pain management, we are also involved
in chronic pain management in non-surgical patients, including patients
suffering from intractable pain due to cancer.
What we do:
- Provide anesthesia services in operating rooms
- Provide anesthesia services to neuroangio and MRI suites
- Provide pre-anesthetic consultation services for high-risk patients
five days per week
- Provide acute pain management for post-surgical patients
- Chronic pain service: We perform nerve blocks for chronic pain patients
in the operating room one half day per week and run a chronic pain
clinic half a day per week at Toronto Western Hospital
Anesthesia at UHN is also involved in both postgraduate and undergraduate
teaching at the University of Toronto. In addition, we conduct preceptorships
and organize continuing education conferences for practising anesthesiologists
in Ontario and internationally.
Anesthesia research is focused on priority research programs, which include:
- Neuroanesthesia
- Ambulatory anesthesia
- Regional anesthesia and pain management
The output of this research is described in our annual report, which includes
information about publications, research grants, and visiting professorships.
