At University Health Network, our Chaplaincy services are based on the
principle that spiritual well-being comes from an individual’s
connection with God, self and the community. Our staff seek to nurture
and celebrate this wholeness by providing assistance that is sensitive
to cultural and religious diversity.
Along with offering special services to recognize spiritual or community
occasions, we do our best to help those in the hospital community who
are dealing with a wide variety of challenges -- from personal upset
and strained relationships, to beliefs and values and their relationship
with God.
What we do:
1. Provide direct patient care
- Crisis management
- Staff support
- Spiritual therapy and grief bereavement
- Ritual services, including religious services; ethical and spiritual
consultations; memorial services; and community follow-up
2. Connect individuals with community resources
- In-patient visits
- Multi-faith availability, to help individuals get assistance from
clergy of various faiths
- Roman Catholic Priest paging access
- Discharge referrals
Our team consists of chaplains who have graduate education
in spiritual and religious matters and represent a variety
of religious faiths. Many
of our chaplains are involved in research, and we have
recently added a Chaplain Researcher in Palliative Care at Princess
Margaret Hospital.
We educate 20-25 residents every year, through the University
of Toronto School of Theology Chaplaincy Educational
Programme.
To stay in touch with changing community needs, we have a Spiritual
and Religious Advisory Committee, which meets three times a year with
leaders of Toronto’s religious communities.
