Thalassemia/Sickle Cell Program

The University of Toronto's Hemoglobinopathy Program is Canada's referral centre for the comprehensive management of patients with hemoglobinopathies (blood disorders) such as thalassemia or sickle cell disease.

Our services:

  • Tertiary (specialized) care, including transfusion and iron-chelating therapy, for individuals with thalassemia, sickle cell disease, and other prevalent disorders of hemoglobin
  • Toronto is the largest centre within the North American Thalassemia Consortium, a U.S. National Institutes of Health-supported network of five North American centres that was recently funded to develop newer approaches to the therapy of this disorder.
