Title: Heart & Circulation
Cardiovascular Surgery

What conditions does cardiovascular surgery treat?
Cardiovascular surgery is a treatment for patients with diseases of the heart and great vessels, and includes procedures such as coronary artery bypass surgery, cardiac transplantation, and mechanical support of circulation. Cardiovascular surgery also provides treatment for many complex cardiac problems, including valvular disease hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, thoracic aneurysms and adult congenital heart disease.

UHN's Cardiovascular Surgery Care Area
UHN is home to the largest open-heart surgery centre in Canada, performing more than 2,100 of these operations a year, with the best clinical outcomes of cardiovascular surgery in the country.

Among the top cardiovascular surgery centres in North America, and the premier centre of its kind in Canada, UHN's cardiovascular surgery care area specializes in all aspects of cardiac surgery. We have the largest experience in the world in treating patients with heart valve disease in adults and end-stage heart failure, and outstanding experience with mitral valve repair, aortic valve sparring procedures, surgery for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, surgery for dysrhythmias and congenital heart defects in adults.

We are on the forefront of cardiovascular surgery innovations, developing many new cardiovascular surgery procedures, such as the use of the left ventricular assist device (LVAD). In addition to performing heart operations, our surgeons also care for patients who need permanent pacemaker implantation, defibrillators and laser lead extractions.
