November 13, 1997 ... The Toronto Hospital Women's Health Program, University of Toronto, has received the prestigious Commonwealth Award for Excellence in Women's Health.
Contrary to a news release issued on Tuesday, November 11 by Women's College Hospital which stated it was the only Canadian institution to receive this award, seven institutions across Canada have received the award, including The Toronto Hospital.
One initiative that received special commendation in the Commonwealth Award for Excellence was the Toronto Hospital Women's Health Community Symposia Series. This is a highly successful public education forum that addresses women's health topics from a biomedical, psychological and social perspective. It involves multi-disciplinary health care professionals including physicians, psychologists, sociologists, bioethicists, nurses, social workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, exercise physiologists and educators.
The series, now in its fifth year, also won the prestigious 1996 national Élan Award for Excellence and Innovation in Promoting and Advancing Women's Health. The Toronto Hospital Women's Health Program sponsors numerous women's health initiatives designed to address existing gaps in women's health research, education, services and decision making to provide better health and health care for women in the 21st century.
