TWH scientists discover cells leading to retinoblastoma
- 06/14/04
Scientists at Toronto Western Hospital have discovered
the specific cells in the eye that develop into retinoblastoma,
the most common eye cancer in young children. The research
suggests that these cells already have cancer-like properties,
a finding that explains why retinoblastoma occurs in
children while other cancers such as colon and lung
cancer occur in adults, developing after decades. This
discovery paves the way for new treatments for retinoblastoma
that target these first cancerous cells, thereby avoiding
the difficult side effects that patients suffer from
treatments such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

PMH Launches Research Institute
Focusing on Breast Cancer - 06/02/04
Canada’s leading cancer hospital is launching
a new research institute devoted to breast cancer, led
by one of the country’s most respected and productive
scientists.
Dr. Tak Mak, who has received numerous international
accolades for his scientific discoveries, will serve
as Director of the Institute for Breast Cancer Research.
The Institute aims to become a world-leading program
in breast cancer research by leveraging basic, translational
and clinical research into dramatic breast cancer breakthroughs.
"This year, an estimated 21,400 Canadians will
be devastated by the news they have been diagnosed with
breast cancer. Another 5,300 will lose their battle
with this disease,” said Dr. Mak. “This
new Institute offers me a leadership role in reducing
that risk and working towards a cure.”
Garnering support from cancer leaders around the world,
the new Institute is being launched with a goal of raising
a total of $125 million. Already, $60 million is committed
to the Institute, with part of the money coming from
funds raised by thousands of walkers in the annual Weekend
to End Breast Cancer events in Toronto.
